چکیده
Three wether sheep equipped with re-entrant cannulae at the proximal duodenum and terminal ileum were given dried cocksfoot in the chopped or ground form and the samples of duodenal and ilea! digesta and faeces obtained for both diets were analysed for individual long-chain fatty acids. The total quantities of fatty acids entering the proximal duodenum (15.2 and 15.4 g/24 h on chopped and ground feed, respectively) were markedly higher than the amounts consumed (8.7 and 7.8 g/24 h, respectively), whilst losses within the small intestine were 13.9 and 14.2 g/24 h, respectively. None of these effects was found to be signifi cantly influenced by the processing of the diet (P > 0.05). The quantity of C18 unsaturated fatty acids in the two feeds comprised 78 % of the total fatty acids but the level of these acids was considerably reduced (19%) in duodenal digesta and was not significantly influenced by diet (P > 0.05), whilst the levels of stearic acid (C18: 0) entering the small intestine were markedly increased on both diets.

A comparison of the voluntary intake and digestion of a range of forages at different times of the year by the sheep and the red deer (Cervus elaphus).
1. Comparisons were made between castrated male Scottish Blackface sheep and red deer (Cervus elaphus) of voluntary forage intake (VFI), digestibility and the mean retention time (MRT) of a particulate-phase marker (103Ru-phenanthroline) in the alimentary tract, when a range of forages: dried-grass pellets, chopped dried grass, fresh-frozen Agrostis-Festuca spp. and heather (Calluna vulgaris, L...
متن کاملAbsorption and metabolism of glucose by the mesenteric-drained viscera of sheep fed on dried-grass or ground, maize-based diets.
Sheep fitted with re-entrant canulas in the proximal duodenum and terminal ileum were used to determine the amount of alpha-glucoside entering, and apparently disappearing from, the small intestine when either dried-grass or ground maize-based diets were fed. The fate of any alpha-glucoside entering the small intestine was studied by comparing the net disappearance of such alpha-glucoside from ...

1. The efficiency of utilization of the dietary energy and nitrogen contained in a dried lucerne (Medicago sativa cv. Chartainvilliers) given either chopped (CL) or ground (1.96 mm screen) and pelleted (PL), was measured in a comparative slaughter experiment. Growing lambs were given equal amounts of digestible energy in the chopped or pelleted form at each of the three planes of nutrition for ...
متن کاملPortal blood flow and heat production in the digestive tract of sheep.
1. Measurements were made of portal blood flow, heat production and oxygen consumption in the digestive tract of sheep either fasted or given the following diets: chopped, dried grass, pelleted, dried grass; chopped, dried lucerne; pelleted, dried lucerne, or a pelleted barley diet. 2. For sheep that had been fasted for 48 h, portal blood flow was 1.84 l/min, total visceral heat production was ...
متن کاملQuantitative intestinal digestion of nitrogen in sheep given formaldehyde-treated and untreated casein supplements.
I. In two experiments, sheep prepared with a rumen cannula and with re-entrant cannulas in the duodenum and ileum were continuously fed on diets of dried grass, dried grass plus formalin-treated casein, or dried grass plus untreated casein. Paper impregnated with chromic oxide was given once daily via the rumen fistula. 2. In ten 24 h collections of digesta entering the duodenum and eleven 24 h...
